Hudson County Correctional is a criminal facility. Detainees are not housed with criminals but share same food, visiting hours and other conditions.
Most detainees at Hudson County are transfers from Varick Street in New York. These are immigrants, many are green card holders who have had some usually minor brush with the law. They are detained indefinitely while ICE works their case. Detention can last years.
Detention at Hudson County make it more difficult and expensive for families from NY to visit.
The food is routinely criticized, and a food strike took place in the summer of 2010.
Visiting hours are stricly limited making visiting dificult even for IRATE & First Friends volunteers.
